Phase

Correct to the night's view, Phase is a lunar light and longform timepiece synchronised to the moon in real time.
Every element has been conceived to evoke a close connection to the moon: conceptually, aesthetically, materially and optically.
Four years in development, Phase incorporates thoughtful details that borrow from both contemporary design and art. Hand assembled to order, Phase is available as a limited edition of 28 with 2 artists' proofs. The edition size mirrors the number of days in the lunar calendar.

The quality of the light and the opacity of the smoked glass is carefully balanced to provide intricate detail of the moon’s surface. The antithesis of looking at a screen, the quality of light feels natural, with a gentle soft gradient and edges that create an ethereal diffuse glow. Highly controlled optics and fading are designed to accurately emulate the quality of natural moonlight.
An icon of contemporary scientific progress and space exploration, our moon continues to be a powerful force; held in reverence across different times, shaping cultures, religions and understanding across the world.
The image displayed by Phase is of the near side of the moon. Released by NASA in 2011 it is a mosaic that combines ~1500 wide angle photographs taken in orbit from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2010. This reveals the moon in an impossible state, consistently illuminated in fine detail, unlike photographs taken from Earth.

The caseback is a mineral composite body, produced using a process which mirrors the way proposed materials such as Lunarcrete could theoretically be used to build on the moon’s surface.
The caseback will be available in two tones; first, the darker Ilmenite then the lighter Feldspar. Inspired by a different mineral quality of the lunar regolith, Ilmenite is named after the Iron-titanium oxide mineral, dark in appearance and found in the lunar maria, the darker plains visible to the naked eye from Earth. Feldspar is a group of silicate minerals that make up a significant portion of the Moon's crust, and these are largely responsible for the bright appearance of the lunar highlands.
Phase combines innovative lighting and diffusion technology with cutting edge manufacturing processes. Employing meticulously configured, custom electronics, bespoke software and optics, with no screws or fixings visible from the outside. Phase’s internal components have been engineered to be as compact as possible, resulting in a slim, elegant work that sits flush against the wall. A combination of meticulously configured electronic and structural elements physically support the front glass while occupying as little space as possible.

Unconnectedness is a core element of the design, so Phase operates without a wifi connection or app, with technology playing a supporting role. As Phase moves through the phases of the Moon, the changes take place in our peripheral awareness. In an oversaturated world increasingly filled with digital intrusions, the studio focused on creating a physical object that instils and promotes calm. Phase prompts us to be more aware of our surroundings, scale and the passing of time.

  • Installation

The artwork is designed to be exhibited in a light naturally lit space, and also looks good in lower light conditions.

Phase is designed as a ‘plug and play’ artwork that is quick and easy to install.

    Installation steps:

    1. Wall hang screw and baton using template provided
    2. Connect power supply
    3. Set local time and date using analogue buttons
    4. Manually adjust brightness, if required

Phase has been designed with an alternative power inlet, so that it can be installed within the cable buried inside a cavity wall by a local electrician.

Using the backup battery Phase can be powered off and on as required, starting back up in the correct phase.

  • Interaction

Phase has a simple 3-button interface which is used to adjust brightness and set the date and time without requiring an app or wifi connection.

Phase has three different modes (all dimmable):

    1. Synchronised with the moon
    2. Fully illuminated
    3. A short, preview lunar animation, started by touch
